Head and Heart: 30 Years of Learning How to Choose the Right Partner

Uncategorized Mar 05, 2026

As I hand the baton of BePartnerReady.com® to Donor Republic, I’ve been in a reflective mood. People have been asking me: after 30 years of brokering partnerships between corporates and causes, what’s the biggest lesson you take with you?

Here’s what I’ve learned:

  1. Don’t jump into bed with just anyone. Alignment is everything.
  2. Heart and mind both matter. Values, goals and energy must match. If they don’t, even promising partnerships unravel - usually messily.
  3. Trust is earned, not assumed. Respect, transparency and hard work are non-negotiable.
  4. Mutual value is essential. If it’s one-sided, it won’t last.
  5. Think long-term. The real magic happens when partnerships grow and evolve over years.

I’ve seen extraordinary alliances that channelled millions into causes. And I’ve seen partnerships that looked perfect on paper quietly fall apart because the alignment wasn’t real.

These lessons aren’t just about business. They’re about life, too.

Learning the Hard Way

I learned some of these lessons the hard way.

In 2000, I sold my business, Cavill + Co, to a global PR firm. On the surface, it looked like a great fit. But I hadn’t dug deeply enough into their rationale or values. Thankfully, my brilliant mentor Chris G had insisted on a “what if it doesn’t work out” clause in the contract. So, when I exited a year later, I got my brand back - which literally had my name all over it - along with my IP. Lesson learned.

A few years later, another suitor came along. He opened with, “I want to buy your business.” After months of sharing far too much information and slowly losing confidence under the weight of his scrutiny, he offered me… a job. In Sydney. I had just built my Grand Designs ‘Hobbit House’ in regional Victoria and had no intention of leaving. It was a complete disregard for who I was and what mattered to me. It took me five years to recover financially and emotionally from that dalliance.

By 2019, I was exhausted. Twenty-four years of running a small business had taken its toll, and if I’m honest, I’d lost faith in people.

Then I met Georgia McIntosh.

The day we met felt like being struck by lightning - in the best possible way. She revealed her values immediately, and they mirrored mine. My heart recognised it first. My head soon followed - she had skills, clarity and youthful energy that complemented my experience. Together, we hatched a plan to turn my corporate partnership IP into an online training program for non-profits & social enterprises.

BePartnerReady.com® was born.

First, we needed a brilliant logo, so I approached the only brand agency I trusted - Marlin, led by Karl and Dan. They didn’t just design a logo; they built a brand. Something that still looks fresh and beautiful six years on. Plus, they’ve stood beside us through every high and low since.

Georgia and I launched BePartnerReady.com® in 2020, right in the middle of COVID - not exactly ideal timing. But our shared values were the glue that held everything together. We not only survived a COVID start-up – we thrived (and laughed a lot!) And six years later, here we are.

The Head Test

When Donor Republic entered the picture, the commercial case was compelling.

They are ambitious but grounded in integrity. They believe in rigour, results and best practice. They understand partnerships, not just as transactions, but as long-term commitments. Founders Marcus and Andrew are deeply respected for their body of work.

They had the capability, the community and the credibility to scale BePartnerReady.com® beyond what we could achieve alone. Tick, tick, tick.

But I’ve learned that head alone isn’t enough.

The Heart Test

The real test was more human.

At our first meeting, what struck me most wasn’t Andrew’s intelligence - it was how he spoke about his daughters. And how he treated his colleague, Tessa. Respectfully. Warmly. As an equal.

Straight-talking and kind. That’s my kind of person.

Because selling BePartnerReady.com® isn’t just selling a product. It’s entrusting a philosophy, a methodology, and a reputation built over three decades.

Our broker encouraged us to keep multiple buyers in play. “That’s the smart way,” he said. But I trusted what I’d learned, so I declined. When you find the right partner, you don’t need a shortlist. You just know.

Both my head and my heart were saying the same thing: this is the one.

Legacy Is Forward-Looking

This isn’t an ending. It’s an evolution. The work continues. The philosophy continues. The commitment to doing GOOD - better - continues. Now on a larger platform.

These lessons haven’t just shaped my business. They shaped my life. They led me to Georgia. They led me to extraordinary collaborators and friends. And they led me to my amazing husband - proof that when head and heart align, you can build something that lasts.

As I enter this next chapter, I’m embracing the year of the firehorse energy.  I’m selling my Hobbit House, rewiring (not retiring), and embracing what comes next – and I feel calm and excited.

Because partnerships built on true alignment don’t end.

They endure.
